DID YOU KNOW  – 3 Signs plants will die in your garden.

Let’s Take a Closer Look – Before You Buy

    •  Spot check under blooms for small white aphids – a poor greenhouse insecticide issue passes to customer.
    • Check for dark stems at base of plant – fungus over moister, watering issues can cause gardening issues.
    • Brush hand over top of blooms, if blooms pop off, plants are suffering from light deprivation; plants been on truck to long. Growers sometimes leave plants on trucks and return to the market with the same load several times vs unloading at greenhouses.

    Plant Stress

Some growers leave plants on trucks for extended periods of time. This causes sun deprivation, it is evident by darkness at the base stem of the plants. Although they may have pretty top blooms, these plants might experience fungus problems and your summer garden will visually suffer.

EMFBG TIP 2 – More Rain, Lower Flower Prices

One very rainy day occasion, I drove around an came by a school that ran an annual flower sale fundraiser. It was a gloomy rainy day; overcast and clouds killed the flower buying mood. I stopped by and chatted with the participants, giving honest compliments on all the great looking plants they had on display. There were lots of backyard Hostas and other expensive perennials. I had a good time talking with the event hosts. I started to buy a couple of items, but wait! This moment represents an opportunity for bargains, deals, and discounts! I estimated there was several hundred dollars worth of retail inventory of perennial plants, tulips, Hostas several varieties, Pachysandra, lilies, black-eyed Susan’s, asters, lavender, and others. It was near the end of the evening, rainy, and gloomy. I didn’t have my truck but made an offer to buy the remaining inventory for $200 if the guy with the pickup truck will take all this stuff to my house. They gladly accepted the offer because nobody wanted to load all those muddy plants back into their vehicles.

    Rainy Day at Eastern Market

I gladly tipped the driver $50 for a ten-minute drive.

Savings: There had to be appx $600 in fully mature, healthy garden plants with 90% being perennials.

Drive around, check for street banners, small town local papers, make Local Flower Fund Raisers part of your flower hunting routine.

Cash Talks – Bargains, Deals, Discounts

It is always cash, it is never cards or checkbook, it is always cash, and compliments.

    Quantities
Always purchase bulk, try to make the big deal of the summer from one spot.

    When to Shop Around
Keep an eye out for time of day–evenings is best, weather–rainy.

    Readership
Eastern Market Shoppers pre-armed with the right bargaining knowledge can buy premium garden flowers, at reduced prices. Additionally, shoppers can apply the same techniques at Big Box Stores, Roadside Flower Stands, and Greenhouses–2X opprotunities may exist even during Flower Day.

Categories: Eastern Market Detroit Michiga Comments Off on Market Entry – Fastest Route

    Market Entry FASTEST WAY IN

During Flower Day and other high traffic weekends.

Most visitors exit I-75 then immediately make a left turn on Mack. This route could take 20-30 minutes in bumper to bumper traffic to eventually snake around and finally get into the market.

There is a much faster way:

1 – Exit I-75 then shoot straight across Mack.

2 – Stay on the service drive (1minute).

3 – Make LEFT turn at first street (Wilkins).

4 – You’ll be in the market center in 3 minutes.

So, while others are sitting in the long lines, you have found the first available parking space and shopping the market:)

Using this route for many years. One crowed weekend I used this method and as soon as I crossed Russell two cars were pulling out, I jumped right into a prime spot right in front of the Eastern Marker office building.

Run Tippy Run Health Books for Kids

    Step One – Germination

STARTING FROM SEED: Get a 2-3 months head start on the growing season by germinating seeds indoors while it is still cold outdoors. When it is time for planting, you have a jump start by planting seedling plants vs starting from seeds. You can cut your planting by as much as two months.

TIP: Use fine well aerated growing medium.

TIP: You can also water seeds from the bottom by soaking in larger tray of water.

A seed needs three things to grow…

Run Tippy Run Health Books for Kids

Run Tippy Run Health Books for Kids

    What a Seed Needs

KEEP CONSTANT: It’s easy to start seeds:

    a. Keep at constant 70 Degrees

    b. Hang pair fluorescent lights overhead for 16h/d

    c. Keep soil moist; prevent roots from drying out

TIP: Use a spray bottle to mist on the soil.

TIP: 1 Coolwhite, 1 Redlight tube from hardware.

TIP: Set lights on automatic timer to turn on & off.

TIP: If seeds get to little light, they will stretch; maintain lights 2-3” above plants.

It won’t take long, before seedlings sprout leaves.

    Seedling in 3-6 Weeks

FAST GROWING: Baby leaves will appear in a couple weeks. A typical tomato plant can grow about an eight of an inch each day.

    What is hardening off?

hardening-off-seedlings-plants-germination Run Tippy Run Health Books for Kids

Run Tippy Run Health Books for Kids

    Hardening Off

ACCLIMATE: A “Hardening off” process will acclimate the young seedlings from their ideal indoor growing conditions, for the more unpredictable harsh outdoor weather. Too much direct sun, can burn the young leaves, cold temperature, and wind, can stunt the growth of the plant, too much water, and plants can suffer root rot, or get washed away.

TIP: Find a protected area near the house, or place tray under a canopy outside for a 2-4 hours per day. Repeat 7-14 days.

Can’t I just stick my seedlings in the dirt?

    Health Books for Kids

    Health Books for Kids

    Loosen the Soil

PREPARE SOIL FOR PLANTING: The idea is to create a fine texture, or loose and crumbly soil. Turn the soil, to find, and remove any large rocks, debris, roots, weeds or branches.

TIP: Healthy loose rich soil is the foundation for healthy plants. The looser the soil, the easier roots move through the dirt. The deeper the roots, the stronger, and bigger the plant.

All plants need is dirt, and water right?

    Health Books for Kids

    Health Books for Kids

    Feed the Plants

ORGANIC FERTILIZER: Use a fertilizer like cow manure to add nutrients to the soil. Use can also use sheep manure, blood meal, soybean meal etc., depending on what vegetables you plan to grow. And don’t forget to always add generous amounts of organiccompost to maintain soil nutrients levels.

When the weather gets warm, it’s time to plant.

    Health Books for Kids planting-time-to-plant-step

    Health Books for Kids

    Time to Plant Seedlings

TRANSPLANT TO THE GARDEN: You’ve maintained your indoor germination chamber, with seedlings getting taller, and roots rapidly expanding to fill the tray, after about 6-10 weeks, you have hardened the young plants off, enriched the soil, it is time to plant those seedlings into the garden. Carefully remove and plant into the dirt one at a time. About 12-24 inches apart to give each other room to expand.

TIP: Pre-water the hole with a fertilizer solution to provide immediate moisture, and nutrients to the plants rooting system for a good start in the new garden, and reduce transplant shock.

    Health Books for Kids

    Health Books for Kids

Water plants during, and after planting.

    Time to Water

KEEP GARDEN WATERED: Not so much so as to flood the young plants out their holes, or to much to cause root rot. But just enough to keep roots moist and from drying out. There is no set time to water a garden. Watering is governed more by observation, to much heat or wind can cause more dryness thus require more frequent watering.

TIP 1: DANGER OF THE FROST – Some morning might present an overnight frost on leaves of tender plants. Don’t panic, just wash the frost off BEFORE sunrise. It is not the frost that kills the plant, but the interaction of sunlight and frost that kills.

TIP 2: MULCH – sprinkle some mulch on top of ground to help hold the moisture.

    Health Books for Kids

    Health Books for Kids

Keep soil weed free, after planting.

    Cultivate

WEEDING: Do not let annual weeds mature and go to seed. Be vigilant, keep your garden weed free! Constant cultivation will keep weed population in retreat. This is another good reason beginner gardeners should start small.

TIP: There are many tools at a gardeners disposal; short hand held, or long handles. Optionally, you can lay a generous amount of solid ground covers in-between plant rows (blocked sunlight, kill the weeds). Weeding is another perfect time for a little soil therapy for you and your kids.

    Use safe natural pest control.

Health Books for Kids Pest Control

    Health Books for Kids

    Pest Control

PEST CONTROL: It’s a given that insects are attracted to vegetable plant leaves. Again, don’t panic. A few tricks can go a long way toward giving in a little to Mother Nature (let insects have their share), and still reap the rewards of a good harvest.

TIP: Some organic gardeners will use homemade water bottles filled with crushed garlic spray to ward off insects. Others maintain a concoction of chili pepper sprays, cayenne peppers, onions, the list goes. Experiment yourself and see if you can discover a better homemade bug spray. Be preemptive, spray BEFORE insects arrive. Spray both top and bottom of leaves to help prevent a large insect infestation.

Start to harvest in as early as six weeks.

History of Sheds – Eastern Market Historic

When Were Sheds Built? -Historical time-line Video

Watch short Eastern Market timeline video (1min).

     Shed 5 April Saturday Morning.

Market activity or visitor traffic is heavy, inventory is light in mid-April. Only a few vendors with minimum garden plant inventory on display. All other sheds are similar in products on display and visitor traffic. Shed 6 was empty; for the exception of only one nursery vendor.

Why are Eastern Market Structures Called Sheds?

    Historically Speaking

The term “Shed”was used back in the early 1800s when local farmers raised a shed to sell their produce for shelter against the elements; early temporary structures were flimsy. To accommodate the large increasing agricultural commercial industry in Detroit, several sheds were erected over strategic areas throughout the city.

(The Eastern Market Structures are Called Sheds)

In the early years there were several such farmer produce sheds or structures scattered throughout the city of Detroit. But, as the farming age was transformed from agriculture to industrialization, the sheds also experienced several transformations during this time as sheds were slowly being replaced and modernized by the changing architecture and expanding urban renewal.

    • Documentations confirm that the original market was located in Cadillac Square, and it was later relocated to it’s present location.
    • Tenative Sheds—including Shed 1 & 2 —were already being contructed as early as 1891.

The term origin of the term “shed” has since faded from public memory; few city individuals even know the true meaning of the word “shed” except those few who represent an unbroken chain of generations  who make the annual pilgrimage to the good old historic Detroit Eastern Market’s annual events such as Flower Day.

The current Eastern Market is the lone survivor of originally several designated markets that was located throughout Detroit in the early years(1800s).

    Only 3 Sheds Numbered 2, 3, 5?

Some visitors to the market notice that there are a total of only three shed designation numbers with large orange numbers on the roof tops. But, the numberings are for only Shed 2, Shed 3, and Shed 5?

(Shed 1 located at “southern end” of market – Built 1891-demolished 1967; current parking lot)
(Shed 2 located at “southern end” of market – Built 1898-victorian double arched architecture)
(Shed 3 located at “southern end” of market – Built 1922)
(Shed 4 located at “mid-market” of market – Built 1938-more of a connecting cooridor)

(Shed 5 located at “northern end” of market – Built 1939)
(Shed 6 located at “northern end” of market – Built 1966)

EMFDBG sheds5-4-3-2 - Photo by Ike Austin

    (Sheds 2, 3, & 5 are obvious, Sheds 1, 4, & 6 are not)

    But…
    Inquiring visitors want to know...

    Where are Sheds 1, 4, and 6?

    Shed 1?

Shed 1 was located just south of  the where Shed 2 stands today. Shed 1 was original built in 1898 then, almost 40 years laters it was torn-down in 1967 due to the expanding freeway systems. So officially Shed 1 no longer exists—it is currently the parking lot.

(Shed 1 no longer exists – “southern end” of market – Built 1841; demolished 1967)

    Shed 4?

Shed 4 does not resemble any of the large structured sheds and bares no mark or shed name on its frame. Shed 4 is the free stand-alone open air connecting structure that sits between Sheds 3 and 4; it is currently painted a rust orange it is considered a walking path between Shed 3 and Shed 5.

     (Shed 4 is located “mid-market” – Built 1938)

    Shed 6?

This structure also bares no name or title. It is located at the northern end of the market. It is simply referred to as the section with the tall roof-top or high canopy, “you know, the area upfront with the raised sidewalk.” During Flower Day all sheds are crammed with flower and garden lovers.

(Shed 6 is located at the “northern end” of the market – Built 1966)

    Opportunity Abound on Flower Day

These types of vendors are ready to deal, you would be doing both of you a favor.

If you are walking the market and spot a large display of a single variety of bedding plants, due to various uncontrolled circumstances growers have overstocked merchandise. These growers can be motivated to sell at bargain prices. In trade lingo they say, the grower is “long on Begonias.” Just knowing what to look for can get $12 healthy, beautiful Begonia flats for only $6! “2X the flower buying power.”

    Excerpt – True Story

One year as I was making my routine market walk, I spotted a grower with an entire truckload of Red Impatiens; beautiful and in prime condition.  I complimented on the beauty of the plants–remember don’t brow beat, compliment–and asked the price. He said “$12.”  I took out my wallet and asked if he would accept $100 for 20 flats; that’s $5 a flat.  The grower called his farther, and cleared the deal.  I fished out another twenty hidden in my wallet as emergency funds and threw that into the already accepted offer. My final price was $6 a flat and the grower netted appx $4. with the relief he was not going to lose $4, and load & haul the flowers back to the farm, and unload. This is a “win win.”

I have also seen new grower vendors at the market hoping to get near full price for their flats, who would pass up these low priced deals even from retailers trying to buy the whole truck and get stuck with lots of inventory at the end of the day.

You just have to have the right eye to know what to look for, and a sincere desire to benefit all.  That’s why I gave up the $20 dollar bill.  I don’t want to hurt the grower, and I like being in the right place at the right time. These deals and start appearing as early as Flower Day.
